A family garden in Hertfordshire, South West facing. Materials used: Heritage Blend bricks, Global Stone Indian sandstone paving in Buff Brown.
This family garden sloped away from the house and to the right. It required leveling in two different directions and the removal of one mature tree and the lower branches of another tree removing to open out the space.
Our clients were keen to keep the summer house and work the design and levels around it. It was also sited above a large concrete air-raid shelter which we decided to leave for economic and environmental reasons.
The family felt it important to them to have a large level lawn and keep an open feel to the garden, whilst creating screening from the houses that overlooked at the end of the property.
Other details in our design brief included; the play equipment to be sited with in the lawn area, the addition of a shed, a small vegetable plot, a herb bed near to the kitchen, a patio for table and six chairs at a lower level and good access to the garden from the house in several places, planting in the style of a cottage garden, with Roses, Rosemary, Box and Hydrangeas being a must.
The garden is a great success and will continue to improve with time.
